While I see the need to have essential services open / reopen, I CANNOT for the life of me figure out why some states, and the Feds, are allowing businesses to start reopening as soon as tomorrow.

In Georgia, golf courses have been open (can do a good job at social distancing, but golfers have to get their own clubs now) for a while. And, same for the beaches in Florida.

But, the case numbers are still going up. And, the state of New York, accounts for nearly 1/3 of all the cases in the USA.

Since my 11 April post, Georgia has see a jump to 19,335 confirmed cases. And, this number has got to be a lot higher (mild symptoms and non-tested cases).

My county has gone from 50 to over 110 in 11 days.

I think we are still a long way away from resolution.

I am from Connecticut

The number of coronavirus cases in Connecticut have now exceeded 17,950 and nearly 1,130 deaths have been reported.

Since yesterday, 412 more people have tested positive for coronavirus and 41 more people have died.

The new numbers released by the state on Sunday bring the total cases in the state to 17,962.

These numbers are just staggering. :(
I can't believe with numbers still going up, people are still gathering! If they would just stay home and isolate.

Our state in Australia Q.L.D reported no new cases overnight. Most people are self isolating and they are handing out $1300 fines to those breaching social distancing. Hopefully this keeps up.
I'm in Ontario and we've seemed to slow down a bit.

This is what I wish Ohio would do. We're not as bad as NY or other states, thanks in large part to Gov. DeWine's leadership on this. But...Thanks to his fear of 1) pissing off the POTUS, and 2) the angry mob of nutjobs who protest outside of the Statehouse (many not masked or distancing), there's a chance he'll cave in to peer pressure. I really hope that's not the case, but it's a real possibility.

I know that there are some of you here who are thumbing your nose at this Coronavirus situation. And, some have said, Well the flu kills a lot of people too.

Yes, it does. But, the 2019-2020 flu season killed up to 62 K people in 6 months; 344.44 a day (https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm ), while CV has killed over 175.6K people in 4 months; that is 1,463.33 a day ) https://www.who.int/docs/default-so...0423-sitrep-94-covid-19.pdf?sfvrsn=b8304bf0_4 )

Even AIDS (though for many cases, it was brought onto themselves), where the first recorded death was in May 1969, and ending Dec 2018 (for recording purposes), the daily death rate is 225 ( https://www.unaids.org/en/resources/fact-sheet )

For a couple of days last week, Georgia saw a drop in numbers. And, the avg daily (20 May to 20 April; 19,335 cases of of 20 April) is 623.71.

And, while there are still 2 counties with 0 cases, as of noontime today, the numbers are 725.66 (2,177 new cases in 3 days. And, since the day is not over, those number will go up.

And remember, while most susceptible prone people are those over 65, with underlying health issues, respiratory issues, and weakened immune systems, it does effect younger people (in GA, age 40 and under stands at 22 deaths).

While I do hope, and pray, that this will be move soon, the world, as we know it, has changed forever. Sure, your daily life may resume. But, think off the loses. Both the physical, and the economical.

Now, let's take the 22 deaths in GA that were 40, and under. Most likely, both parents are still alive (44 people). And let's say, that 2/3 of them had kids (7 - rounded down; though probably higher, as most families in GA have 2+ kids). Now, that is 51 people directly effected by the loss. Include siblings, and relatives, that number is far greater.

Also, not only are those 22 people not working, the economic strain on the family because few are able to work at home.

They are not spending the $. So, businesses are having to layoff workers. Now, you got more people without jobs.

So, in closing for today, please, if you do not have to go out, stay home. Stay safe. And, if you do have to go out, take precautions.

I went out for my weekly grocery trip and noticed a lot more people wearing masks. I'd wear one myself but don't know where to buy one locally so I ordered a pack online for ten bucks but it ships from china so it'll probably take a month to arrive.

One good thing that may come of this is a shift in work culture to be more friendly toward working from home. I understand it's not feasible for all jobs, but I work an office job that can easily be done from home. I communicate with my coworkers through video chat now, and there has been no loss in productivitity. So hopefully when the lock down is over, companies will consider being more lenient with allowing working from home. I would like nothing more than to move to a rural area far away, but am forced to live in a big city cause all the jobs are here. And think of all the savings for the companies from not having to rent/buy as much office space. Also think of all the savings to the environment with less people commuting daily.

NJ, tons of cases and now knowing people personally that have gotten it and some are not with us anymore as a result. We are very close to NYC. I don't believe all news but when I see friends going to a funeral that's not even allowing me to come, yeah, it's pretty real and sobering.

my condolences to you and yours . . . but if i may ask, did the people who perished have medical pre-conditions?

No serious conditions but some smoked. Ages 40, 51 and 86 of those I know that have passed. Just yesterday got word my stepdad's nephew died, he was somewhat overweight but nothing more than probably 40% of the Americans I know. I also know several that got it and lived but said it was the sickest the ever felt and they thought they were going to die. Feeling like you can't breathe must be terrible.

Well, Georgia has exceeded 30,700 cases. And, in the past 17 days, my county, has more than doubled the number of cases. And, more than triple the number of deaths.

GA is one of the states that "reopened" on 27 April. But, luckily, cities and counties can override is.

Yet, it was appalling going to Walmart the other day. While employees worn gloves, and masks (saw one guy with the mask on his chin  ), the number of customers who had no mask, gloves or practicing social distancing. :emoji_angry:

So, I am still self-isolating.

If you do not have to go out, stay home. Stay safe.

I'm in the greater Chicago metro area. The governor here put in a social distancing policy in place early on . He's the exact opposite of that idiotic pinhead in Georgia who put's no value in public health. The cases in Illinois are greater than in California, which is about 4 times bigger. The city of Chicago skews the stats, with the minority communities being hit the hardest. When you live or work in tight quarters you don't have the luxury of social distancing. That's why Covid cases have spiked in meat packing plants, nursing homes and prisons. Not counting a few drive throughs, I've gone into stores only twice in 6 weeks or so, those being the liquor store and the hardware store where you will have customers who are "manly men", yet everyone had on a mask. Damn, I could go for a haircut, but . . .
It's thought that Covid 19 will slow down a bit in the summer and then come back later in the year during flu season. If that's the case, and you still have these self-centered yahoos who refuse to wear masks in public, there is going to be a hoard of public shaming incidents that will lead to many fist fights, imo. It will be great for the cable news ratings;)

Georgia is now over 32 K (1,421 new cases in 2 days) cases. And, authorities have seend fit to updating the web site 3x a day (was 2x a day).
(not sure what good it does, since there is a 14 hour lapse between last of the previous day, and the first of the new day, though)

So, anyone who says this is over, is full of shit.
(nothing personal; you want to risk your life, fine with me. But, do not begrudge those of us are taking precautions).

And, if you think, "I'm young, and it won't happen to me", think again. At last check (2 weeks ago), GA had 21 cases, with 3 deaths, where the person was 40 or under.

Though, it sure puts a damper on being able to get laid for my birthday tomorrow.

Ah, ya beat me to that.

I was going to be posting that tonight.

In fact, New York City beats the whole countries in the World sorted by Total Positive cases with 340K, and also beat Spain and France who finished 4th and 5th sorted by Total Deaths Tolls with 26K.
China
reported 82K positive cases and 4K death tolls with Wuhan as the very first case found epicenter.

Besides all the conspiracy theories around, and based on the known database, this is just...unfair!

Maybe numbers are being manipulated  Pure speculation on my behalf. Judge for yourself(y). After all this is the discussion board. It does seem quite odd to say the least

Even based on the reported data of each country is also necessarily unreliable because of the confusion of recording of the original deaths caused by Covid19 or non Covid19.
The truth
is working relatively today, it depends on which perspective we are talking and believing.

There’s a lot of great things about living in Canada. This is not one of them.
This guy killed his wife and two children in 1976.He is getting out for 90 days all because of the coronavirus. On top of that,he will be living in an apartment with his girlfriend 24 hours a day.I wish I was making this up.Imagine just how the family of the victims feel about this.
